HGBA Code of Conduct

Hopkins Girls Basketball Association (HGBA) strives to create a positive sports environment.  By registering for HGBA, you and your family members agree to abide by the rules set forth in this document during games, practices and other HGBA events. Parents and guardians of HGBA players are expected to be accountable for not only their actions and their player’s actions, but also of visiting family members and friends.

HGBA PARENT / GUARDIAN / PLAYER / COACH

  1. I will encourage good sportsmanship by demonstrating positive support for all players, coaches, officials, and tournament hosts.
  2. I will remember that the game is for the kids - not the adults.
  3. I will do my best to make sure that youth sports are a FUN and POSITIVE experience.
  4. I will place the emotional and physical well-being of the athletes ahead of my personal desire to win.
  5. I commit to a sports environment that is free from drugs, tobacco and alcohol and will refrain from their use during games.
  6. I will treat other players, coaches, fans, volunteers and officials with respect.
  7. I will not berate the officials.
  8. I will let the coaches coach.  I will not undermine the coaches' instructions or directions.
  9. I will not use profanity.
  10. I will not utilize social media to negatively portray any player, coach, other parent, team, official, administrator or any parties affiliated with HGBA.
  11. I will communicate my concerns through the proper channels in a dignified manner.
    1. Our communication plan includes:
      • 24 hour cooling off period will be observed
      • Player/parent should contact the coach via email/text to determine a time for a conversation.
      • Players in grades 6-8 are encouraged to have conversations with coaches before getting parents involved.
      • If the issue is not resolved first with the coach, the next step is a conversation with the HGBA Coaching Director.
      • If the issue remains unresolved after a conversation with the Coaching Director, you may contact the HGBA Board Co-Chairs.

Violation of the HGBA Code of Conduct:

Should violation(s) of the HGBA Code of Conduct occur,  the HGBA Board will consider the following protocol:

  • 1st occurrence: Parent receives a warning (written) and automatically agrees to remedy the behavior.
  • 2nd occurrence: Parent, and possibly player, suspension from one week of all HGBA activities, including observing practices and attending tournaments.
  • 3rd occurrence: Player or players (if multiple siblings are registered) will be dismissed from the program for a minimum of the remainder of the 2024-25 season with no refund of registration fees and will  forfeit their volunteer deposit; approval to join in future seasons will be made at the sole discretion of the HGBA Board.

Conflict Communication/Escalation Plan

When dealing with conflict, the communication plan will include the above steps:
  1. First, have a respectful conversation with the coach or coaches of the team
    • 24 hour cooling off period will be observed
    • Parent/Player should contact the coach via email/text to determine a time to have the conversation
    • We look for players in grades 6/7 to first own conversations with coaches before getting parents involved
    • Under no circumstances should these conversations take place before, during or after a game or during a tournament
  2. If the issue is not resolved first with the coach, the next step is a conversation with the Coaching Director
    • Contact via email/text to determine a time to have this conversation
  3. If the issue remains unresolved after a conversation with the Coaching Director, you may contact the HGBA Board Co-Chairs
    • Contact via email/text to determine a time to have this conversation
